Just read a bit about ultrasonic sensors, they can read from 1-400mm

A pretty easy task would be to let it go sideways in 5mm increments, read the depth (distance to the speaker) and write it in an array.

With a bit of algebra involved you could align that array to zero and let the microphone travel parallel the enclosure no matter if those are parallel to the mic stand in real life or not.
